Artist Statement
Inspired by the
beauty of the world around me, I find great satisfaction
painting the Canadian landscape. The raw splendor of the
wilderness and the dramatic seasonal rhythm of the north are
compelling. In my oil paintings I strive to capture these
atmospheric effects.
The Canadian
landscape possesses many psychological tensions. It can be
rugged and wild, yet beautiful, cold and frightening, yet
alluring. I use these elements to invite the viewer into a
dialogue about the sublime paradoxes of our country.
I draw upon
abstract qualities found within nature, like the mottling of
the clouds within a sky at dusk and the melding of rocks,
trees and water into a pattern upon the earth. Through these
means, my aim is to capture the intrigue of the landscape
and create a desire to know what lies beyond the horizon.
